Reimagine Higher Ed · Meet Dr. Nicole R. Robinson

Hello, I’m Nicole.

Educator. Scholar. University executive. Entrepreneur.

Each chapter of my career has given me a different way of seeing higher education and a deeper appreciation for what our institutions make possible.

As higher education faces rapid change, I’ve chosen to focus my work on how we reimagine these institutions: building on their strengths, reconsidering inherited approaches, and creating new possibilities for the people and communities they serve.

I’m glad you’re here. Let me share a little of the journey that brought me to this work.

Founder, Reimagine Higher Ed & Cultural Connections by Design
Creator of the 4P Culture Framework™

Where my journey began

It began in a music classroom.

I started my career as a public-school music educator. Teaching gave me an enduring interest in how people learn, how they make meaning, and what becomes possible when an idea finds the right form.

That interest carried me into higher education, where I advanced through the faculty ranks to full professor. My academic appointments included the University of Memphis, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Syracuse University before I was recruited to the University of Utah as the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Presidential Endowed Professor.

Scholarship, teaching, and leadership became connected parts of my work. I published numerous articles in leading research journals in my field, presented at national and international conferences, and authored three academic textbooks.

Together, these experiences deepened my understanding of how ideas develop, how people learn, and how knowledge moves into practice. They also led me to look beyond the classroom at the institutional conditions that shape what educators and students can accomplish.

From the professoriate
to executive leadership

A role that let me see
across the institution.

My executive role at the University of Utah gave me an unusual opportunity to understand higher education across academic affairs, student affairs, and university business operations.

As Associate Vice President for Equity and Diversity, I served on the President’s Cabinet and reported directly to the provost. The Associate Vice President role was the highest executive position within our DEI structure. My responsibilities included a budget of more than $10 million for my area and 25 direct reports, including seven senior-level directors, spanning student centers, research, development, and university-wide marketing and communications.

Our office was housed in Academic Affairs while also carrying substantial student-facing responsibilities. Working closely with HR and other business offices deepened my understanding of how academic priorities, student experiences, staffing, and resources intersect.

I partnered with the deans of all 16 colleges to develop strategic plans that embedded equity and inclusion into their academic work. Across a decentralized university, this required understanding each college’s context while establishing a shared institutional direction.

My work included designing programs and strategies that connected people, information, and resources across the institution. Examples included:

  • Faculty leadership development: A year-long faculty intensive that helped participants translate equity and inclusion principles into their teaching, leadership, and institutional practice.
  • Student Pathway to Success: An early-warning system designed to identify students at risk of academic difficulty and coordinate support before they reached a crisis.
  • Campus-wide crisis communication: A strategy that brought together key campus units, including Marketing and Communications and campus police, to establish coordinated protocols for responding to bias incidents and campus climate events.
  • Educational access and outreach: A coordinated partnership with 30 public schools, Salt Lake Community College, and Snow College to strengthen pathways into and through higher education.

I also served on the founding executive council of the School for Cultural and Social Transformation, helping develop its charter, tenure and promotion guidelines, and institutional identity. Its dean reported to our office.

Each required more than launching a program. I had to understand where existing systems fell short, how responsibility was distributed, and what would enable people across different offices to act together. That work deepened my understanding of how institutions turn an intention into sustained practice.

My CV documented what I had built, but it did not capture how the ideas took shape or the thinking behind them. When I left the institution, much of that intellectual insight left with me, without being articulated in a way others could learn from and carry forward.

The entrepreneurial chapter

Following an idea beyond campus.

An educational tool I developed at the University of Utah, Matrix of Intersectionality, began gaining national attention. As demand for my work grew, I made the leap into full-time entrepreneurship in 2018, founding Cultural Connections by Design.

Through this work, I helped higher education institutions understand their campus cultures and address the practices, relationships, and structures shaping people’s experiences. My consultancy has served nearly 100 institutions, corporations, and academic-based nonprofit organizations.

That work also led me to develop the 4P Culture Framework™—People, Place, Process, and Power, a way of examining how institutional cultures take shape and how meaningful change becomes possible.

In 2024, as the political and policy landscape shifted, the work I had built, deeply rooted in higher education, was significantly disrupted. I found myself at a crossroads: step away from that work completely or reconsider how my experience could contribute to what higher education needed next.

I chose to stay engaged with a larger question: How must higher education evolve to meet the changing needs of the people and communities it serves—and prepare for what comes next?

That question led me to launch Reimagine Higher Ed, bringing together my experience as an educator, scholar, university executive, and entrepreneur to help institutions and their leaders examine how they operate, lead, and build what comes next.

The ideas shaping what comes next

The best thinking needed to reimagine higher education is already among us.

Academic leaders are developing new approaches while doing the work of putting them into practice. They are testing ideas, navigating institutional realities, and learning what it takes to move from possibility to meaningful change. That experience holds knowledge that higher education needs.

Through Reimagine Higher Ed, I partner with academic leaders to examine institutional conditions, develop ideas, and design ways forward. My 4P Culture Framework™—People, Place, Process, and Power provides a lens for understanding the environments in which those possibilities take shape.

Through my Client Spotlight, The Dean’s Perspective, and The Chair’s Perspective series, I explore the thinking behind leaders’ work and allow their insights to push my own thinking forward about how we reimagine higher education. Bringing these contributions into a wider conversation gives others something substantive to examine, learn from, and build upon.

The work I do today

Bringing experience and ideas
into wider contribution.

Today, as founder of Reimagine Higher Ed, I partner with academic leaders to uncover the intellectual thinking behind their work and bring those contributions into the conversations shaping higher education’s future.

Signature Perspective gives that work a dedicated home: a private intellectual strategy and editorial partnership to identify a contribution, articulate the framework behind it, and support its wider dissemination.

My experience as an educator, scholar, executive, and entrepreneur shapes what I bring to this partnership. I believe the broader higher education community needs to understand how you think, what your experience has taught you, and what others can learn from the contributions you are uniquely positioned to make.

The thinking behind your leadership can become something other leaders learn from, adapt, and carry into their own institutions—and, more importantly, help shape what higher education becomes next.
